This book is an enjoyable, witty read. Coll and Persephone make a great couple, which definitely keeps his mother and London on their toes. Whether running into or out of trouble, there’s rarely a dull moment.
It was evident from the start that this book is part of a series. It is a fun read without reading the other books, but I could tell that I was missing jokes and running themes. I would have liked this book even better if I had read the other two books first, especially seeing as I missed the scene where Coll ran down a street naked, swinging a claymore around.
Coll is an interesting character as he is gleefully violent, punching anyone that he feels deserves it. He is also a conscientious giant who does not push for more than women wish to give. That doesn’t stop him from playing stupid just to terrify the London wallflowers that annoy him. I loved how protective he is of Persephone without being too overbearing.
Persephone can definitely hold her own against Coll, and their banter keeps the book lively. Finding her own way in the world requires strength, but she is not too proud to accept help when she knows that she needs it. She is a chameleon who can blend in or stand out as she chooses. She is a delightful heroine.
The plot is fast-paced, and even with the danger, it remains light-hearted. The MacTaggert brothers know how to steal the scene, whether driving their mother to distraction, wooing their ladies, or horrifying the Ton.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am planning on looking for the first two in the series. I look forward to reading more books by Suzanne Enoch.
