“Here kitty, kitty, kitty.”

Kate Daniels

I think this book had a massive case of overhyping, and I expected better than what I got. This world is exciting, and an intriguing concept, but the characters fell flat. I can easily see the series getting better, but this book was not exceptional.

I love the worldbuilding in this book. Technology and magic vying for dominance is a cool concept that, for the most part, works. It seems odd that after so long of dealing with the switches, there aren’t more forms of transportation, etc., that function in both magic and technology. Perhaps this is fleshed out in other books.

The characters are the weakest part of the story. Kate comes off as uncaring and incompetent. Revealing her planning after the fact is part of what makes her seem inept, but that doesn’t help her waspish attitude towards friends, allies, and potential love interests. Curran is a colossal jerk who blames Kate as soon as she doesn’t react as he wants or when something doesn’t go as planned. Their rough edges might get smoothed out in other books, but that doesn’t help with this one.

There is a lot of potential for this series, and I will likely read the next book to see if it gets any better, but this book didn’t live up to what I expected.
