Leonard Goldberg - The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes

The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes #1

“Because, my dear John, the game is now afoot!”

John Watson Sr.

The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes is a fun, captivating look at the next generation of Holmes and Watson. While some of the repeated names were a little offputting, the story and characters more than made up for it.

John Watson and his son John Watson Jr. are contacted to help investigate an apparent suicide. In the process, they join forces with Joanna Blalock, the titular daughter of Sherlock Holmes, and the new generation of Lestrade. Toby Two is also made use of along the way. After rolling my eyes at the names, I enjoyed each character’s unique presence.

The trio makes a great team, with romance blooming between Joanna and John Jr. along the way. Joanna was serious but not cold, and I enjoyed watching her work through each new piece of evidence. John Jr. is a respected pathologist who brings his strengths to the team as the body count rises. Finally, John Sr. was an excellent third wheel. His reminiscing and information were the glue that held the story together.

Unlike many mystery novels, the question of who the villain is was quickly answered. Instead, the focus was on the game of cat and mouse to find the evidence needed to arrest them. This approach was engaging and made the final confrontation feel more rewarding after many twists and turns.

It has been many years since I’ve read a Sherlock Holmes novel, so I can’t say how similar they are to this book. But, I truly enjoyed my time with the second generation of Holmes and Watson. I look forward to reading more books in the series.
