Global Search and Rescue #3

Disclaimer: Susan May Warren is my sister-in-law. She did not request that I review this book. All opinions are my own.

I expected that I would be giving this book two or three stars when I was a quarter of the way through. I was frustrated with the characters and was praying that it would get better. Thankfully, I had a reason to root for Ham and Signe by the end, and I got the resolution that I wanted to a long-running plotline.

Surprisingly, it was not Ham and Signe that were frustrating me early on. Instead, it was Orion and Jenny who starred in The Way of the Brave. It took me a while to warm up to Jenny in that book, so it was aggravating to see her character, essentially, reset to square one. It was irritating enough that I set the book down and went to bed.

Ham and Signe have their own issues, but I could understand their conflict. They both want what is best for their country and loved ones but are at loggerheads about achieving that goal and what that entails. It is not easy watching their relationship at first because of how much emotional baggage they have, but their relationship grew on me significantly as they interacted with Aggie.

Like the other books in this series, there is a lot of action, including another natural disaster—this one I did not see coming. While it was the most unbelievable of the three, the team kept up a frenetic pace as they fought to save themselves and those around them. Tense situations are in ready supply, whether battling the elements, skirmishing with spies, or working to out traitors in the government.

This book concluded a plotline that started in Knox, the first book in the Montana Marshalls series. While the resolution was one I had been rooting for, I would have loved to have seen more of the reactions to the finale. This storyline touched a lot of different characters and would have emotional impacts on many of them. It felt rushed as the story immediately moved on without even showing the result of many books build up.

The Marshalls and Global Search and Rescue sagas have reached their conclusion, and many new relationships have been forged. I enjoyed most of the books and look forward to what lies ahead in the world of Susan May Warren.
