Global Search and Rescue #2

“Bad coffee. Got a real bite to it.”

Disclaimer: Susan May Warren is my sister-in-law. She did not request that I review this book, and all opinions are my own.

Poor Aria cannot get a break. I think after the events of this book, she will refuse to ever go on vacation again. Last time, she fell off a mountain, and now she is stuck in the Keys during a hurricane. Fortunately, she has Jake to come to her rescue while causing some chaos of his own. This is an action-packed thrill ride that I would have given five stars to except for the yo-yo effect of the push away – pull together aspects of the romance.

Jake and Aria are both dealing with survivor’s guilt, which is the most significant conflict in their relationship. Aria doesn’t feel that she’s worthy, and Jake thinks he brings too much trouble to any relationship. We got a good look at Aria’s reasons in The Way of the Brave, but it wasn’t as apparent that Jake was just as broken.

Despite their personal issues, Jake and Aria both readily jump into the fray to help others. Aria comes off a vicious bout of sickness and immediately starts offering medical aid to Mimi, the owner of the resort where she was staying. Even when offered the chance to be evacuated and leave others in danger, she turned it down. Jake puts his skills to use as the aftermath becomes as dangerous as the storm. Knowing that he could be injured or killed doesn’t stop him from trying to help those in need.

The tension and pacing work well, especially when a break is taken to check in on Hamilton Jones, who will be the lead in The Price of Valor, who is in Europe looking for answers about his wife. There were plenty of twists and turns on both continents to keep me interested. Some scenes played out as I expected, but some took me by surprise.

This book is a worthwhile addition to my shelf, which I thoroughly enjoyed despite the yo-yo-ing romance. It also left off with a cliffhanger that makes me antsy for The Price of Valor to come out.
