The Cinder Spires #1
“Truth does not become untruth simply because its existence upsets the scion of a High House.

Steampunk is not one of my usual genres, which led to this book languishing on my shelf for far too long. A unique, beautiful world, memorable characters, and action-packed battles kept me enthralled.
The world is centered around massive inhabited spires. While Albion is the only one visited, others exist and are not always friendly. Aurora has been on frigid diplomatic terms with Albion for a while, and the diplomacy has mainly been negotiated with airship cannons. Airships are a blend of magic (ether) and engineering, with battles showing both sides to advantage.
A setting is only one part of a great book, though. It’s the characters that truly make it come alive. This cast really comes through. I loved the zany etherealists who wield extraordinary power but are stymied by something as simple as a doorknob. Rowl of the Silent Paws clan is also a standout as he lords it over the spire from his place in Bridget’s arms. He is a cat, after all. Gwen was the only one I wasn’t enthralled with right away, but I even came to like her by the end.
This book does not lack action as intrigues unfold. From hand-to-hand brawling to massive airship battles, there is plenty of combat to see. War is coming, and the opening salvos have been fired.
I look forward to seeing what is in store for this world when the next Cinder Spires book comes out.
