Mercy Thompson #8
“Things will look better in the morning. And if it doesn’t, we’ll invite your mom down to deal with both Guayota and Beauclaire.”
Adam Hauptman
Night Broken is more somber than previous books in the series. Mercy is under a lot more stress, and for the most part, the pack was less than helpful in relieving that stress. A new addition to the cast looks promising for more hijinks in the future, though.
Christy frustrated me from her first appearance in the book. She comes to the pack for shelter but immediately started playing dominance games with Mercy. She never stopped, and no one else stepped in to tell her to knock it off. Mercy does come out on top, but I fully agreed with her request to simply hand Christy over to her stalker and be rid of her.
Zack’s addition to the cast didn’t make much sense unless it’s a set-up for a future book. He swings into town and joins the pack but quickly fades into the background. On the other hand, Gary is an interesting new character adding a new dimension to Mercy’s family history. With him and Coyote popping up, there will definitely be more chaos in the future.
There is plenty of action and tension to go around. Mercy is still a weaker fighter but is capable of holding her own when the need arises. An unknown enemy adds to the troubles. Old friends and antagonists show up to help or make trouble.
This book stands up well as a part of the Mercyverse, but Christy holds it back from the five-star rating that I gave other entries.
