This series has definitely been a saga. But unfortunately, it ended on a low note. The drive to make everything bigger and bolder diminished the climax and disappointed me.
Queen of Storms had built up so much momentum that I was genuinely excited to see where this book would go. Unfortunately, that momentum quickly fizzled out as changing goalposts made a large portion of the action feel muted. In addition, many villains were built up and drifted out of the story. Coaltachin, the Sisters of the Deep, the Church of the One, and Nytanny never reached their true potential. That said, the heroes never did either.
The final battle felt redundant because a bigger bad had been introduced, and now that conflict felt like a footnote. Of course, it didn’t help that Nytanny never was truly fleshed out to make it feel important in the long run.
At the end of the Firemane Saga, Master of Furies left too many questions unanswered for me to feel satisfied. The epilogue especially leaves me feeling that my questions will never be answered. This is sad because Garn is a beautiful world that I would love to see fleshed out.
