Cry Wolf picks up right where the novella Alpha & Omega left off. I recommend reading that one first, or you might feel a little lost at the beginning. Anna and Charles are new to the mates’ thing, but I can tell that I will enjoy their escapades.
I have always enjoyed the pack dynamics in the Mercy Thompson books, and adding Omegas to the mix doesn’t change that fact. Submissives aren’t meant to be the pack’s punching bags, as Anna is learning, and Omegas are outside of the dominant/submissive dynamics and able to bring peace to those around them.
Like other Patricia Briggs’ books, this one does not shy away from the lingering effects of trauma. Whether it’s the abuse suffered by Anna in Chicago or Walter’s PTSD, there is no instant cure. Time can make things more bearable, so it was interesting to see that even Bran has a past that still haunts him.
The tension really ratchets up in this book as the hunt for a rogue wolf becomes more dangerous than anyone thought. I loved that there were still moments of levity even when everything looks like it’s about to head south. Anna is still coming to terms with her place in the pack, but she still comes out swinging when the going gets rough.
I loved learning more about old friends and getting to know Anna and Charles as they come into their own as a couple. I look forward to many more books, watching them grow.
