The Headmistress of Rosemere is the second book in the Whispers on the Moors series, but it works as a stand-alone novel. I enjoyed Patience and William’s bittersweet tale of loss, change, and hope for the future.
I empathized with both situations. William’s circumstances might be self-inflicted, but his determination to correct course is admirable. Patience lives up to her name following her father’s death as she works to keep her family and school together. Both have loyal friends to help them, and Emma is a sweet, bright spot with all the charm and chaos that an eight-year-old can cause. There is one main character that I never came to like. He got better later on, but his arrogance and attitude annoyed me through the end.
The plot focuses on the people and relationships, so it moves slower than other books that I’ve read lately, and that’s not a bad thing. Focusing on the people and history gives later events and the few action scenes more impact.
Sarah E. Ladd shows her growth as an author in her second book. The Eastmore estates’ population is a rich cast of characters with joys and sorrows that bring them to life. I would love to see more of what happens to Cassandra after Rosemere, but I don’t know that will happen. In either case, I intend to keep reading her books in the future.
