This book is a suspense-filled ride from start to finish. Whether dodging Black Friday shoppers or hunting down the people who took her pack, Mercy is on a mission. It is neat getting a better look at Mercy’s world’s politics as she toes the line between human and supernatural.
Even when caught wrong-footed, Mercy will do everything in her power to protect those she loves. This is one of the things that I love about her. Over six books, she amassed quite the collection of allies that she taps into in this book, whether they’re willing to help or not. Some characters have not shown up in a while, so it was great seeing what they’ve been up to.
The most exciting change was how much focus was on the humans who are usually overshadowed by the Werewolves, Fae, etc. Kyle especially is a knock-out as he helps Mercy navigate the legal jungle involved in the pack’s disappearance. New arrival Agent Anderson walks the fine line between supernatural justice and the laws governing everyone and gives the government agency CNTRP a face. I have a feeling I’ll be seeing more of him as the wolves merge into the human world.
This book is also a good reminder that as much as we’ve come to love the werewolves, they are still predators. Mess with them, and they will not hesitate to do what is necessary to protect themselves and others, even kill. This is predominantly seen through Adam’s eyes, which is a fun change of point of view.
Things are changing in Mercyverse, but Mercy and the gang will rise to the challenge, as this book shows. I look forward to reading the rest of the series available and yet to come.
