Ruby Jane is a roller coaster ride of a finale for the Montana Marshalls. There are joy and sorrow, makeups and breakups, and heroes and villains. We finally have answers to questions first raised in Knox, and the Montana Marshalls series comes to a fitting conclusion.
Wyatt was a frustrating read for me, so I was hoping for better with Ruby Jane, and I got it. I like both York and Ruby Jane, who have been central characters to the storylines since Ford. While they have struggles, especially with how to handle York’s amnesia, they work well together as a couple. Ruby Jane is finally able to show off her strengths as a CIA analyst. While it seems that she should have more defensive skills due to her work and family, her real forte is in combing through data to find connections.
While Ruby Jane and York take center stage, all of the other Marshalls make appearances. The Marshall boys do like to try to keep their sister safe. It was fun to see how things have changed since we last saw the Yankee Bells, Mikka, and the extended family. Like any family, there are fights, but when the going gets tough, the Marshalls stick together.
Ruby Jane manages that delicate balancing act between pacing and suspense. Often, the story slows down to ratchet up the tension, but Ruby Jane doesn’t fall into that trap. The story moves along quickly while keeping you wondering who the real villain is until the end.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get answers to all of my questions. This lack of a resolution was deliberate, and the way things were left, we’ll be hearing more about the Marshalls in future series.
Still, the Montana Marshalls was a fun series, and Ruby Jane was an excellent finale.
