Montana Marshalls #1

“The stage seems to be the one place that’s mine. It’s where life makes sense. It’s safe…”

Kelsey Jones

Disclaimer: Susan May Warren is my sister-in-law, and I received this book for free. She did not request that I review it. All opinions are my own.

Knox is the first book in the Montana Marshalls series. This series follows the Marshall siblings who were raised on the family ranch in Montana, the Marshall Triple M. Each book follows a different sibling that the book is named after.

Knox gave up a chance to become a professional bull rider when his father died, and he took over running the ranch. In comparison, his siblings have much more exciting careers like a smokejumper firefighter and being a Navy Seal.

Knox’s path crosses with Kelsey Jones at a rodeo, NBR-X, where his prize bucking bull is performing. Kelsey is a member of the Yankee Belles, an all-female musical trio trying to get their big break into a touring contract with NBR-X. Kelsey is haunted by the trauma that was inflicted on her as a child, and they first interact when Kelsey has a panic attack in a crowded food tent. Their next meeting is quite explosive as someone sets off a bomb in the arena.

The book is an excellent blend of action and slower interludes. Knox and his brother Tate, who is hired as the Yankee Belles’ bodyguard, try to determine who set the bomb and if they are still a threat to Kelsey and the other Belles. At the same time, Knox must work to make ends meet on the ranch in the financial fallout from the bombing.

Unlike most romances, the story is also told from the perspective of Tate Marshall and Gloria “Glo” Jackson, a member of the Yankee Belles. These perspectives set up the second book in the series, Tate, as well as giving an outsider’s view into Knox and Kelsey’s growing relationship.

There is a strong cast of supporting characters, including the other Marshall siblings. If you are a fan of Susan’s work, you have already met the oldest brother, Reuben, in the Montana Fire series. The siblings bicker and love each other, and some secrets come to light.

Knox is a compelling first entry in the Montana Marshalls series. With four more books to go, it will be interesting to watch the events to come on the Marshall Triple M.
